Amphiphilic Statistical Copolymers from Catalytic Chain Transfer as Reactive Surfactants in Emulsion Polymerization

نویسندگان

چکیده

Statistical copolymers of methacrylic acid (MAA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl (BMA), or lauryl (LMA) were synthesized via cobalt(II)-mediated catalytic chain transfer polymerization (CCTP) used as macromonomeric stabilizers in the emulsion MMA. By varying composition, length, concentration macromonomers, we able to tune particle size, molar mass, rheological behavior latexes. Most latexes stabilized with macromonomers containing BMA LMA showed properties such small yield stress shear thinning similar those binders for coating applications.

Submicron polyethylene particles from catalytic emulsion polymerization.

Particles of linear polyethylene (M(n) = (2-3) x 10(3) g x mol(-)(1); M(w)/M(n) = 2-4) obtained by catalytic emulsion polymerization of ethylene possess a nonspherical, lentil-like shape with an average aspect ratio of ca. 10 and diameters from 30 to >300 nm, as determined by TEM and AFM. The particle structure results from a stacking of the lamellae along the one shorter axis of the lentils (i...

Catalytic production of olefin block copolymers via chain shuttling polymerization.

We report a catalytic system that produces olefin block copolymers with alternating semicrystalline and amorphous segments, achieved by varying the ratio of alpha-olefin to ethylene in the two types of blocks. The system uses a chain shuttling agent to transfer growing chains between two distinct catalysts with different monomer selectivities in a single polymerization reactor. The block copoly...

Role of Surfactants in Emulsion Polymerization Polymers by design

The determination of an emulsifier’s adsorption properties under conditions similar to those occurring during emulsion polymerization can provide important information to aid in the selection of the most appropriate surfactant for a given system. Results show that the latex particle size is dependent on the strength of emulsifier adsorption (∆Eads) at the particle/aqueous phase interface and is...

Silica/Polyethylene Nanocomposite Particles from Catalytic Emulsion Polymerization

Catalytic emulsion polymerization of ethylene with nickel catalysts in the presence of silica nanoparticles affords stable dispersions of silica/polyethylene nanocomposite particles. The modification of the surface of silica particles by grafting upon their surface of octenylor octylsilanes is a prerequisite for obtaining composites. Different morphologies of composites particles were observed ...

1,2-Polybutadiene Latices by Catalytic Polymerization in Aqueous Emulsion

Catalytic aqueous polymerization of butadiene by the cobalt catalyst system [Co(C8H13)(C4H6)]/CS2 affords colloidally stable latices of highly crystalline syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene (Tm ) 190 °C, ∆Hc ) 60 J/g, Mw ∼ 105 g/mol, 97% 1,2, 3% 1,4-cis). Catalyst modification with reagents containing electrophilic carbon atoms (e.g., aromatic formamides) strongly decreases polymer crystallinity (T...
